A Week of Little Thoughts about Life…We’ll See What Happens!

Buffy Sprick taught me to distance run when I was 20 years old. I was an intern in the PR department of a local theater and Buffy, 28 years old with a personality that fit her name, was my ‘older’ role model. She was a tiny, hoarse-voiced ball of energy. A distance runner and a buyer of beer for underage drinkers. She said, “you should run with me sometime” and when I did, it was the beginning of a 26-year love of mine — running.

Unlike so many people, I’ve never been an ambitious runner. The Army Ten-Miler in DC is the longest race I’ve ever accomplished or wanted to. And I’ve always said “I like to run and I don’t want to make it a chore, so that’s why I don’t train for a marathon.”

I’m getting older. I’m almost 47 and I’ve been running since I was 20. I met a friend for breakfast recently and we had to laugh at our conversation about ailments — “I’m getting a little sciatica,” I shared. “They’re changing up my migraine meds,” she said.

Yet beyond laughing, I hurt pretty much every time I run. I have a dog that must be exercised every day and the running wears him out. But, my body is telling me, “Lady, it’s time to make some adjustments.”

For any of us, it’s not easy to make adjustments. We take a while to accept that…
